In December 2009, Tarantino revealed that he had another project but wouldn't reveal any details except that it was less epic in scale and in a different genre entirely from Inglourious Basterds and that he could finish it in a five to six month period of intensive writing. On May 2, 2011, it was confirmed that project was the "Southern" that he had talked about in 2007, with the title Django Unchained, featuring the revenge of a slave on his former master.[22] Tarantino finished the script on April 26, 2011, and handed in the final draft to The Weinstein Company.[23] In October 2012, frequent Tarantino collaborator RZA said that he and Tarantino had intended to crossover Django Unchained with RZA's Tarantino-presented martial-arts film The Man with the Iron Fists. The crossover would have seen a younger version of RZA's blacksmith character appear as a slave in an auction. Scheduling conflicts prevented RZA's participation.[24]
One inspiration for the film is Sergio Corbucci's 1966 spaghetti western Django, with star Franco Nero having a cameo.[25] Another inspiration is the 1975 film Mandingo about a slave trained to fight other slaves.Django Unchained Movie Wiki
